During night operations on the flight deck of Kitty Hawk Kitty Hawk or Kittyhawk, part of an offshore sandbar on Cape Hatteras, NE N.C., E of Albemarle Sound. Nearby is Kill Devil Hill, where the Wright brothers experimented successfully (1900–1903) with gliders and airplanes.  (CV 63) Airmen Frank Fuentesriccardi and Antwan Booker of the air department's aviation fuels division recognized a light flashing on the water as a strobe strobe

1. A strobe light.

2. A stroboscope.

3. A spot of higher than normal intensity in the sweep of an indicator, as on a radar screen, used as a reference mark for determining distance.
 from a float coat which all flight deck workers are required to wear. They immediately notified flight deck control and initiated man overboard procedures. A sailor who had fallen overboard was rescued and returned safely to the ship.
