Report on reconnecting out-of-school youth.


A new report from the American Youth Policy Forum (AYPF AYPF American Youth Policy Forum ) looks at how communities across the nation are responding to the dropout problem. Whatever It Takes: How Twelve Communities are Reconnecting Out-of-School Youth was prepared by AYPF in cooperation with the National Conference of State Legislatures

, the National League of Cities The National League of Cities is the oldest and largest organization in the United States devoted to strengthening and promoting cities as centers of opportunity, leadership and governance. , the National School Boards Association, the National Association of Secondary School Principals The National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) is a United States educational advocacy organization consisting of secondary school principals. To promote excellence among middle school and high school students, NASSP founded and still sponsors the National Honor  and the Council of the Great City Schools.

Among the programs profiled is the Montgomery County Out-of-School Youth Task Force in Dayton, Ohio, which has also involved Sinclair Community College in its efforts. The report also looks at programs in Pima County, Arizona Pima County is located in the south central region of the U.S. state of Arizona. The county is named after the Pima American Indian tribe which was indigenous to the area. As of the 2006 U.S. Census estimate, the population was 946,362. , including an agriculture-focused alternative high school called YouthWorks, the Pima County Vocational High School, and the Pima County One-Stop and Youth Opportunity Center.

AYPF's report also profiled the TransCenter for Youth Schools in Milwaukee, which include the Northwest Opportunities Vocational Academy, El Puente High School and the CITIES Project High School. In Baltimore, Maryland, the Healthcare Careers Alliance was cited.

In addition to community programs, the report also looked at a number of major national programs such as Job Corps and YouthBuild.
