Switzerland suffered the greatest losses, with estimated damage in excess of $2 billion. Between Aug. 19 and Aug. 24, heavy rain caused lakes and rivers in several regions in Switzerland to overflow, triggering flooding, landslides, and the evacuation of roughly 2,500 people from their homes. In central Switzerland Central Switzerland is the region of the Alpine foothills geographically the heart and historically the origin of Switzerland, with the cantons of Uri, Schwyz, Obwalden, Nidwalden, Lucerne and Zug.

The Swiss Insurance Association reported that more than 36,500 claims--stemming from household, business interruption and auto losses--were lodged as a result with private insurers, who incurred a total loss of about $1 billion.

As in Switzerland, rivers overflowed their banks also in Germany and Austria, causing extensive damage in Bavaria and several western Austrian provinces. Economic losses in Bavaria alone are expected to reach 172 million euro (approximately $203 million), the report said.
