Construction is scheduled to begin this week on an $8 million development project that involves a major renovation of the first airplane hangar ever built at Los Angeles International Airport “LAX” redirects here. For other uses, see LAX (disambiguation).

Los Angeles International Airport (IATA: LAX, ICAO: KLAX, FAA LID: LAX
 and the only structure remaining from L.A.'s original Mines Field airport.

The exterior of the Spanish Colonial Revival structure, called Hangar One, will be restored to its original 1929 condition, and its interior will be upgraded to provide air cargo air cargo: see aviation.  warehouse space.

Breaking ground this week on the 8.75-acre site are a new 47,000-square-foot warehouse, to be located just north of Hangar One, and a 51,000-square-foot office/warehouse, to be located just south of Hangar One.

All three buildings are owned by Texas-based Avia Development Group Inc. under a 30-year ground lease with the City of Los Angeles

 Airways Inc. has leased the 47,000-square-foot warehouse and Mexicana Airlines has leased the 51,000-square-foot building.

The actual restoration of Hangar One is not scheduled to begin until June 1, with an expected project completion date of December.

Hangar One was the first of five similar structures built by the City of Los Angeles in 1929 after the city had acquired a 50-year ground lease on 640 acres of bean fields, then known as Mines Field.
