Renesas Technology to Offer Sequoia(TM) Telematics Platform with Support for the QNX Neutrino Operating System and Software Drivers.

The Highly Integrated Platform with Full Development Support Facilitates Designs for Cost-Sensitive Telematics Systems

DETROIT & SAN JOSE, Calif. -- As part of its ongoing program to offer complete system solutions for automotive telematics applications, Renesas Technology America, Inc. today announced that its Sequoia[TM] platform, which is based on the Euclid[TM] telematics chip (SH7397), is now supported by a QNX A multiuser, multitasking, real time operating system for PCs from QNX Software Systems, Ltd., Ottawa, Ontario (www.qnx.com), that is noted for its low-memory requirement and rapid response. Similar to Unix, it has been in use since the early 1980s. ([R]) board support package (BSP BSP

). That BSP, consisting of the QNX Neutrino neutrino (ntrē`nō) [Ital.,=little neutral (particle)], elementary particle with no electric charge and a very small mass emitted during the decay of certain other particles. The QNX-enabled Sequoia platform will be showcased at the Convergence 2006 show, October 16 - 18, 2006 in Detroit, Michigan (Renesas booth #02-37 1333).

"With the availability of this RTOS and its driver support on the Sequoia platform, automotive electronics companies will be able to integrate middleware and develop software applications in a fully integrated development environment See IDE.

," said Paul Sykes, marketing manager, automotive business unit, Renesas Technology America, Inc. "This will enable them to create and debug code more efficiently and thus achieve a faster time to market. Renesas is capable of supporting other operating systems, as needed as needed prn. See prn order. ."

"Together, QNX Software Systems and Renesas have many joint successes in the automotive telematics and infotainment market, and QNX is committed to providing optimized support for the latest Renesas automotive platforms," said Andrew Poliak, automotive business manager, QNX. "Our BSP support for the Sequoia platform not only allows developers to leverage the rich multimedia capabilities and unparalleled reliability of the QNX Neutrino RTOS, but also allows them to enjoy the productivity advantages of the QNX Momentics([R]) development suite."

Besides the QNX BSP, other new features have been added to the Sequoia platform. There now is an optional Bluetooth([R]) module for hands-free communication that enables drivers and passengers to make hands-free cell phone calls in a vehicle. Another new feature is an optional GPS module for location identification. The platform also now supports digital audio decoding with common digital audio formats such as MP3 via USB USB

The platform is scalable and expandable. Centered around the high-performance 32-bit RISC RISC

Other user defined functions can be accommodated using the optional expansion interface to meet specific requirements. Engineering investments in application development are protected because the platform has a building-block type system architecture with reusable hardware and software elements and a common function-card interface.

The availability of the QNX BSP will enable Renesas, COMET partners, and customers to further develop the applications and middleware needed to deliver cost-sensitive telematics systems. For example, they include acoustic echo cancellation, noise suppression, speech recognition and text-to-speech (TTS (1) See text-to-speech.

As the next step, Renesas plans to add a Bluetooth streaming audio capability, including associated middleware and voice recognition technology.
