The powerful processor is based on a newly developed 400MHz SH-4A SuperH(R) Family CPU core that achieves very high performance: 720 MIPS (Million Instructions Per Second) The execution speed of a computer. Processing Instructions Quickly, Moving Data Efficiently

The 400MHz SH-4A CPU core operates nearly 70 percent faster than the 240MHz SH-4 CPU core used in other SH-4 series devices. The SH7770's cache memory is a four-way design that provides a higher hit rate and helps speed up software processing. Because the instruction set is upward-compatible from the SH-4 CPU core, existing SH-4 application software can be reused, reducing system development times.

A 64-bit bus (also usable as a 32-bit bus) allows connections to external DDR-SDRAM DDR-SDRAM - Double Data Rate Random Access Memory  (Double Data Rate-SDRAM), while a 32-bit extension bus allows connections to external flash memory or SRAM See static RAM.

. A unified memory architecture lets specific internal function modules share memory, making it possible to reduce the number of external memory parts. To enable the modules to access external memory efficiently, the SH7770 has a built-in memory controller, a bus bridge and bus arbitration circuitry. 2D/3D Graphics Engines Implement Impressive Displays

The two graphics engines in the SH7770 improve the quality of system display outputs, while minimizing the processing load on the CPU core so applications can execute faster. In many cases they eliminate external chips that would otherwise be required.

The 2D graphics engine can be used to draw high-quality maps quickly for car navigation systems. For example, a special bold-line drawing function makes it easy to create lines of constant width regardless of direction when drawing roads, and makes possible endpoint processing and painting of linked areas. An anti-alias function smoothes drawings of polygons, oblique lines (Geom.) a line that, meeting or tending to meet another, makes oblique angles with it.

This engine enables the SH7770 to handle 3D illustrations both for navigation and multimedia applications and is designed to minimize external memory accesses. It produces smooth, high-quality 3D graphic display operations in full color and with anti-alias processing, without requiring a dedicated external graphics memory.

Development Tools Accelerate System Design Cycles
