Renesas Technology Corp., the world's number-one supplier of microcontrollers (MCUs) and a leader in security IC products, today announced that it will unveil a highly integrated, more powerful version of its turnkey electronic point-of-sale (ePOS) reference platform, the ePOS-2, in the Renesas booth (#3B001) at the Cartes CARTES Computer Arts Centre at Espoo  show in Paris, France, November 15-17.

Manufacturers of ePOS equipment can use the flexible secured solution to develop multiple types of payment transaction systems, including electronic-fund-transfer point-of-sale (EFTPOS EFTPOS - Electronic Funds Transfer Point of Sale ) terminals, add-on A purchase of additional goods before payment is made for goods already purchased.

An add-on may be covered by a clause in an installment payment contract that allows the seller to hold a security interest in the earlier goods until full payment is made on the later goods.

Modular Architecture Provides Design Flexibility

A modular architecture gives the ePOS-2 platform considerable design flexibility -- unlike ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) Pronounced "a-sick."  Sami Nassar, general manager, advanced solutions group, Renesas Technology America, Inc., "With the Renesas platform, ePOS manufacturers can cost effectively develop a wide range of production-ready terminals with proven security. For versatility and to minimize system cost, many 'must have' circuit elements are built into the H8SX/1653F MCU."

As a testimony to the quality of Renesas' ePOS solutions, leading EFTPOS manufacturer and provider of secure electronic transactions Secure Electronic Transaction (SET) is a standard protocol for securing credit card transactions over insecure networks, specifically, the Internet. SET is not itself a payment system, but rather a set of security protocols and formats that enables users to employ the existing : with solutions from smartcards and point-of-service transactions systems to payment engines and managed services An umbrella term for third-party monitoring and maintaining of computers, networks and software. The actual equipment may be inhouse or at the third-party's facilities, but the "managed" implies an ongoing effort; for example, making sure the equipment is running at a certain quality , KeyCorp has used Renesas MCUs to power its transaction systems in the past and will continue collaborating with Renesas on the new platform.

Doug Hatton, General Manager R&D at Keycorp Limited, said, "We have been collaborating with Renesas Technology on research and development projects for the payment industry for more than 10 years. Our Innovation Group is pleased to continue this joint effort with the new Renesas ePOS-2 platform, which serves the trusted transaction sector."

The transaction products based turnkey ePOS-2 platform can provide many benefits. They can reduce fraud for financial institutions, provide a more secure payment system for merchants, enhance the control of devices with a remote management capability for payment service providers, and reduce operating costs operating costs nplgastos mpl operacionales  at all levels. Importantly, the Renesas platform helps reduce system cost for terminal manufacturers, so new equipment can be produced at attractive prices that facilitate the growth of standard and advanced ePOS services worldwide.
