), network protocol stack, and Linux system integration. These software packages offer an excellent out-of-box experience that allows developers of Linux embedded systems to shorten their development time and, thus, get products to market quicker.

The supported Renesas hardware platforms are designed to provide robust performance and sophisticated peripheral capabilities to ease system design and accelerate application development. Three of the devices, SH7354, SH7343 and SH7722 are members of the popular SH-Mobile product line, which have a built-in H. 264 video CODEC engine for fast video playback and consume less power. Built on the versatile SH4AL-DSP CPU CPU

, MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3 (MP3), and MPEG-4 data, making them ideal for multimedia applications. The SH7763, on the other hand, is based on the powerful SH-4A core with a built-in floating point unit (FPU (Floating Point Unit) A computer circuit that handles floating point operations.

interface, which make it ideal for industrial control and office automation systems.

Many such products use the open-source Linux operating system (OS), which combines the flexibility and longevity advantages of the SuperH devices to offer a compelling solution. The OS kernel in the Linux solution for the SH4AL-DSP based processors requires only about 500Kbytes, a small memory footprint that reduces overall system cost. The software is highly optimized to maximize network data throughput in multimedia and network applications. The result is smooth application performance that wins end-user approval. Capabilities available include network management stacks, media players, GUI (Graphical User Interface) A graphics-based user interface that incorporates movable windows, icons and a mouse. The ability to resize application windows and change style and size of fonts are the significant advantages of a GUI vs. a character-based interface.  libraries and 3D graphics support.

Additionally, the Linux BSP includes device drivers for key peripherals, such as an LCD controller and USB, Ethernet, serial, and audio interfaces. Audio, video and speech CODEC functions have been pre-integrated and are available as fully optimized, verified middleware. This code eliminates the need for system engineers to design their own drivers, freeing them to concentrate on enhancing product performance and creating value-added features.

The free Linux solution for SH7722, SH7354, SH7343 and SH7763 series microprocessors will be available in Q2 2007.

Renesas works with various third-party companies to offer a complete development solution for the SuperH devices. Partner companies include Kenati Technologies that provides system integration services and networking products, Trinity Convergence for video and voice over IP software and support, HI CORPORATION for graphics engines and their support environment, and Trolltech for graphics engines and user interface support.
