The editor provides a brief introduction and a chronology of major events of the era. In keeping with the series' goal of emphasizing culture over politics, figures here are drawn from the worlds of visual art, literature, science, architecture, and music. Both famous (Michelangelo, Shakespeare, Galileo) and lesser-known personalities (the Muslim scholar Leo Africanus Leo Africanus (ăfrĭkā`nəs), c.1465–1550, Moorish traveler in Africa and the Middle East.
