The FCC was created under the U.S. for more than ten years, allows publishers to send fax solicitations (renewal reminders, for example, or alerts to coming events) to their current and former subscribers and customers, unless they opt out. But in 2003, the FCC said it intended to eliminate the exception, instead requiring publishers to obtain signed, written consent from their constituents before faxing them. The elimination has twice been put postponed, largely because of opposition by publishers and other faxers. Stay tuned.
