Fulfilling the Challenge Campaign Chairman Anne S. Close (podium) proves that the campaign's efforts have paid off as she announces the most recent total of pledges and contributions. The challenge, initiated by a donation from Iowa businessman Claude Ahrens, was fulfilled with a total of $1.75 million. Architectural renderings of the institute's exterior and conceptual plans for the interior were unveiled in San Antonio. A Texas native and the first African American to walk in space, Dr. Harris shares many of his research findings on the effects of extended time in space on the metabolism, muscle mass and other aspects of physical functioning. Sharing his personal commitment to recreation and leisure services, Dr. Harris introduces his brother, Dennis Harris (center) assistant director of the Ft. Worth Department of Parks and Recreation. Dr. Harris also serves as a member of the Board of Directors for the Boys and Girls boys and girls mercurialisannua. Dean Tice with papers naming them Honorary Mayors. Although not literally, NRPA took over San Antonio when 8,000 delegates, presenters and exhibitors came to the City for its annual Congress for Recreation and Parks October 5-9. The reception, following the First All Congress General Session, has quickly become a favorite event of delegates and exhibitors alike. This year over 4,800 went through the hall on its debut night. NRPA, Australian Park, Recreation Group Sign Exchange Agreement The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) and Royal Australian institute of parks and Recreation (RAIPR) have signed a protocol outlining details of professional, technical and citizen exchanges involving members of the respective organizations. The agreement is the fifth in a series of international protocols between NRPA and allied organizations worldwide. Existing protocols involve the Canadian Parks/Recreation Association, National Recreation Association of Japan, New Zealand Institute of Parks and Recreation, and the Institute for Leisure and Amenity Management (Great Britain). The agreements establish guidelines for reciprocal exchange involving NRPA and members of the respective organizations. Beyond personal exchange, the protocols have encouraged the international flow of information important to professional, technical and citizen policymakers in parks and recreation. A copy of the Australian or other protocols and implementing guidelines are available from the NRPA division of public policy. The young boy at left shows that recreation and parks professionals are not the only people to enjoy the many exhibit hall displays. New to the exhibit hall format this year were demo labs, where exhibitors could show their products in use. Some of the demonstration activities included tennis and basketball. Recognized by her part-Seminole family as a "seer," Cloud was invited back to the NRPA Congress after receiving the highest evaluation score of any speaker at last year's gathering. Recreation and parks professionals and citizen advocates participate in the Intergenerational institute and the Model Park Planning institute during the three days of educational offerings at Congress. More than 300 concurrent education sessions and on-site institutes were offered tor every level of experience on a variety of topics. In total, more than 200 Continuing Education Units (CEUs.) were available. Parks and Recreation's Best Honored with National Awards The First and Second All Congress General Sessions are well known for the excitement they generate. Much of that enthusiasm is spawned from the honoring of professionals and citizens that are recognized for their endeavors in parks, recreation and leisure services all year long. Of the many awards given during the Congress, five national programs are featured most prominently.
