Reign win two more at nationals.

Byline: The Register-Guard

The Oregon Reign won two games Friday to join a group of 32 teams still alive in the championship bracket of the ASA Asa (ā`sə), in the Bible, king of Judah, son and successor of Abijah. He was a good king, zealous in his extirpation of idols. When Baasha of Israel took Ramah (a few miles N of Jerusalem), Asa bought the help of Benhadad of Damascus and  18-and-under national softball tournament at Rockford, Ill.

The Reign opened with a 2-1 victory over the Illinois Xtreme before blanking the Buffalo (N.Y.) Bisons 6-0. The Oregon squad resumes play at 11:30 a.m. today.

 Caley Peterson scattered six hits in seven innings before Jackie Kerrigan came on in relief and recorded two strikeouts and a groundout to earn the save.

Sara Lewis was 2-for-2 with two walks, two runs and two RBIs to lead the Reign over Buffalo. Tess Bair and Shannon Stacy also had two hits each, and Kerrigan tossed a complete-game two-hit shutout with five strikeouts.

Alecia Ditlefson drove in four runs Friday as the Creswell Fury defeated the Alaska North Stars 7-4 in the opening round of bracket play at the ASA B 18-and-under national tournament in Spokane.

Janet Freerks and Kaylea Colley each had two hits and scored three runs for Creswell, which meets the South Medford Blue Aces at noon today.

Baseball

Scott Nelson Scott Nelson (born September 6, 1985) is an American soccer player who currently plays for the Houston Dynamo team in Major League Soccer.

Nelson played four years at Furman University, scoring thirty one goals during his collegiate career and fighting back from a hip injury
 scored on a throwing error in the 11th inning to give the Pepsi Challengers an 8-7 victory over Richey's Market of Corvallis in the American Legion American Legion, national association of male and female war veterans, founded (1919) in Paris. Membership is open to veterans of World Wars I and II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.  Zone 3/4 playoffs at Corvallis.

The Challengers (50-12-2) swept the two-game series and advanced to the state tourney that begins Wednesday in Medford.

Kellen Hobie had a three-run double and Patrick Cooley retired the last 10 batters he faced to pick up the victory for the Challengers.

The Willamette Valley The Willamette Valley (pronounced [wɪˈlæ.mɪt], with the accent on the second syllable) is the region in northwest Oregon in the United States that surrounds the Willamette River as it proceeds northward from its  all-stars won their opening game at the Pacific Northwest Babe Ruth 14-year-old Regional Tournament in Roseburg on Friday, beating Gillette, Wyo, 11-0.

 and Corey Moran combined on a two-hit shutout for Willamette Valley, Tyson Cochran scored three runs and David Deautschman was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

The Willamette Valley all-stars swept two games Friday in the regional tournament for 12-year-olds at Longview, Wash., defeating Belgrade, Mont., 13-0 and Kelso, Wash., 11-10.

Cross country

A reunion celebrating the 30th anniversary of Lane Community College's 1972 national championship cross country team will be held Sunday at Shadow Hills Golf and Country Club.

The undefeated squad was coached by Al Tarpenning, who led the Titans to 37 state, regional or national titles during his tenure at Lane.

The 1972 squad included Gary Cassidy, Dale Hammitt, Bill Cram, Randy Griffith, Tim Williams, Garrie Franklin, Scott Richardson Scott Andrew Richardson (born September 5, 1977 in Oldham, Lancashire) is a first class cricketer who played 13 first class matches for Yorkshire County Cricket Club between 2000 and 2003. He also played 1 List A one day game in 2002.  and Tom Tyler Tom Tyler (August 9 1903 – May 1 1954) was an American actor in silent and sound motion pictures.

He was born Vincent Markowski, into a Polish-American family.

The entire team is expected to attend the reunion with the exception of Franklin, who died in a car accident in 1973.

Football

Oregon State announced Friday that it has sold out the Fresno State football game, the third individual game to be sold out for the 2002 season.

A limited number of tickets remain for the Eastern Kentucky (Aug. 29), UNLV UNLV University of Nevada, Las Vegas  (Sept. 14), California (Oct. 26) and Arizona (Nov. 2) games.

Golf

Three Eugene youngsters participated in the first round of the U.S. Kids Golf World Championships in Williamsburg, Va., on Friday.

Sulman Raza is tied for third in the 8-year-old division after shooting a 37, Bobby Monaco carded a 77 and is tied for 12th in the 10-year-old category, and Nic Polski is tied for 12th among 12-year-olds with a 76.
