Rehabilitation of the Hand, 4th ed.

Rehabilitation rehabilitation: see physical therapy.  of the Hand, ed 4 By Parry CB. Stoneham, MA 02180, Butterworth Publishers, 1981, cloth, 409 pp, illus, $110

The fourth edition of this book, originally published in 1981, was reprinted in 1986. A long-time writer in the area of rehabilitation of the hand, the author describes methods of treatment used in Royal Air Force rehabilitation units.

The book has nine chapters: "Functional Anatomy functional anatomy

It includes the entire limb, and thus, is not synonymous with the term upper arm. ," "The Rheumatoid Hand," and "Resettlement Re`set´tle`ment

." The chapter on functional anatomy is simple and short. It covers the muscles, nerve supply, muscle function, and sensation. Many case histories are presented throughout the text, complemented by photographs showing the progression or the final outcome of the condition.  of sensation, range of motion, and force of grip and pinch. These data are valuable for making comparisons with current patient performance.

Emphasis is placed on the importance of physical therapy and occupational therapy. The authors include treatment programs for each of these disciplines, along with suggestions for games and functional activities that may be useful in the rehabilitation process. Also provided are practical suggestions based on the extensive experience of the author. Important splints splints

used in hand rehabilitation are depicted. Detailed plans for the splints also are given.

Although the references are dated (before 1980), they are valuable as a source of basic knowledge of hand rehabilitation and should be valuable from a historical perspective.

From the first edition to the current edition, the author has provided details of what he calls the "usual way" in the rehabilitation of hand disabilities. The treatment methods are conservative, and the specialized techniques are relevant to the problem described.

This book would be of interest to physical therapists, occupational therapists, and recreational therapists who are involved in hand rehabilitation.
