Regulating reduced pressure testing for evaluating hydrogen levels.

The reduced pressure In thermodynamics, the reduced pressure of a fluid is defined as its actual pressure divided by its critical pressure.

testing of aluminum melts for evaluating hydrogen levels in the molten alloy has been performed using the same basic method for more than 50 years. But, while reduced pressure testing is a fairly simple procedure, faulty practices and a lack of control of important variables can distort the test results and lead to wide variations in metal quality with disastrous effects upon scrap levels and casting properties.

The True Reduced Pressure (T.R.P.) Test unit has been designed by Q.C. Designs Inc., St. Joseph, Mich. (marketed by Pyrotek, Spokane, Wash.) to minimize operator influences and eliminate many of the common sources for error in the casting process.

The new equipment package features a vacuum level for testing that is automatically controlled to a preset preset Cardiac pacing A parameter of a pacemaker that is programmed permanently when manufactured  absolute level rather than a differential level from current atmospheric pressure atmospheric pressure

Force per unit area exerted by the air above the surface of the Earth. Standard sea-level pressure, by definition, equals 1 atmosphere (atm), or 29.92 in. (760 mm) of mercury, 14.70 lbs per square in., or 101.
. Current testers use gauges that measure the reduced chamber pressure that is influenced by movement of high and low pressure weather systems through the test area. This can introduce unadjusted testing errors of more than two inches of mercury in the actual vacuum level and vary measured specified gravities in the test samples by as much as 0.20 units.

Automation of the testing cycle provides benefits beyond improved vacuum control. Once the cycle is activated by the push of a button and the chosen vacuum level is reached, the pump shuts off (afterwards af·ter·ward   also af·ter·wards

Another feature in the equipment package includes a high temperature glass viewing window in the vacuum chamber that allows operators to observe the solidifying metal sample. The timing and evolution of gas bubbles are known to be indicators of both gas and inclusion levels in the melt.
