), a leading Internet domain name An organization's unique name on the Internet. The chosen name combined with a top level domain (TLD), such as .com or .org, also called a "domain extension," makes up the Internet domain name. For example, computerlanguage.com is the domain name for the publisher of this Encyclopedia.  registrar, and StarNet, Inc., a worldwide provider of wholesale ISP services, today announced a business alliance to make domain registration easily available to StarNet's network of over 800 ISP partners.

Through the alliance, ISPs can access register.com's domain registration application together with other StarNet products and services, allowing them to provide value-added services A value-added service (VAS) is a telecommunications industry term for non-core services or, in short, all services beyond standard voice calls and fax transmissions.  to their end-users while generating revenue from registrations.

"Domain registration services are becoming a standard feature offered by ISPs, but development and maintenance can be a significant drain on resources," said Richard Forman, President and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. "By working with StarNet, register.com can target high quality ISPs and provide them with a cost-free domain registration application through a wholesale services provider they know and trust."

"StarNet's continued success stems from our devotion to providing all of our ISPs with the ability to offer the best products and services available," said Russ Intravartolo, CEO of StarNet Inc. "By adding the register.com service to our suite of services we can provide our ISPs with the tools they need to succeed."

ISPs can now access domain registration services through a register.com-built Application Programming Interface (API (Application Programming Interface) A language and message format used by an application program to communicate with the operating system or some other control program such as a database management system (DBMS) or communications protocol. ) incorporated into StarNet's MegaPOP(TM) service. The API allows the ISP to outsource domain registration while ensuring all domains reside on the ISP's domain name servers (DNS (Domain Name System) A system for converting host names and domain names into IP addresses on the Internet or on local networks that use the TCP/IP protocol. For example, when a Web site address is given to the DNS either by typing a URL in a browser or behind the ). As a result, StarNet's ISPs can easily set up site hosting accounts for newly registered domain names. In addition, ISPs can provide customer service support to domain registration customers through Web-based, password protected customer service applications.

Through register.com's API, StarNet's participating ISPs can provide search and registration services in real time for .com, .net and .org domain names, in addition to 27 country code top level domain extensions, including .co.uk (UK), .fm and .sh.

"The beauty of the StarNet infrastructure is that it offers ISPs one-stop shopping for a host of important services, and adding register.com domain registration to the MegaPOP service is a perfect fit for all parties," said Rafael Collado, Managing Director of register.com's Indirect Channel Sales. "Today's alliance illustrates how incorporating register.com's API at the wholesale provider level allows both StarNet and register.com to provide domain registration efficiently to the widest possible audience."
