LANE COUNTY

Trail to be created Saturday: A new trail will be created on Mount Pisgah on Saturday when REI holds its annual community service project.

The work will include habitat restoration on the trail, named No. 17.

Volunteers will report at 8:30 a.m., with trail work from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., lunch at 1:30 p.m. and a trail dedication ceremony at 2 p.m. Each volunteer will receive an REI "Stewards of Planet Earth" T-shirt, bottled water, energy bars and lunch.

There will also be a nature activity program for children ages 5 through 12 inside the Mount Pisgah Arboretum The Mount Pisgah Arboretum (85 ha / 209 acres) is a non-profit arboretum and botanical garden located within the Howard Buford Recreation Area (930 ha / 2,300 acre), between the Coast Fork of the Willamette River and the slopes of Mount Pisgah near Eugene-Springfield, Oregon, .

The event is sponsored by REI, the Lane County parks department, Friends of Buford Park, Mount Pisgah Arboretum, Northwest Youth Corp, AmeriCorps, Boys & Girls Clubs of Emerald Valley and Committed Partners for Youth.

Trail work participants can register at REI or mail a

registration form to REI at 306 Lawrence St. in Eugene.
