Candidates' forum set: A candidates' forum for all Coos County positions on the May 21 primary election ballot will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Greenacres Grange Hall.

Rhody winners announced: Mike Bones of Bones Nursery took home the sweepstakes award last weekend at the Early Rhododendron rhododendron (rō'dədĕn`drən) [Gr.,=rose tree], any plant of the genus Rhododendron, shrubs of the family Ericaceae (heath family) found chiefly in mountainous areas of the arctic and north temperate regions and also of the  Show, sponsored by the Siuslaw Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society.

The show had 395 entries of rhododendrons and azaleas. Bones received the most total points for first, second and third place ribbons in the show.

Other trophies were won by Rochelle Campbell for the best light pink; Bones for the best fragrant rhody and best in class 48; Paul and Freda Ziegelmair for best dark pink; Gene Cockeram for best spray, best azalea azalea (əzāl`yə) [Gr.,=dry], any species of the genus Rhododendron, North American and Asian shrubs of the family Ericaceae (heath family) that are distinguished by the usually deciduous leaves. , best new American hybrid and best red; Everett Hall for best lepidote lep·i·dote

LOWELL

Public hearing on block grant: The city of Lowell will hold a public hearing April 16 on its application to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for Community Development Block Grant money to help lower-income people rehabilitate their homes.

The proposed project would help at least 40 people in the city.

The hearing will be at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 107 E. Third St. Those who wish can testify in writing, but written comments must be received at City Hall no later than 5 p.m. the day of the hearing to be considered.
