Regional Meeting on Screw-Worm Fly.
- The two-day regional meeting on capacity building for monitoring standard of Screw-Worm Fly began at the Holiday Inn Hotel the under the auspices of Dr, Ishaq bin Ahmed al Ruqaishi, Undersecretary of the Agriculture Ministry.
Dr, Abdulmajeed bin Hamoud al Rawahi, Director of Veterinary Health Research Centre at the Agriculture Ministry explained in the Ministry's speech that the Sultanate hosted the workshop on December 2009 which came up with important recommendations to enhance the efforts exerted in this field.
Dr. Al Haj Sulaiman Sharaf, Head of the Office of the Peaceful Nuclear Technology at the Foreign Ministry hailed in his speech the role of the Sultanate in its efforts in hosting this meeting, as well as, the important topics being discussed.
The meeting aims to contributing in assessing the feasibility of sterile insect technique Sterile insect technique is a method of biological control, whereby millions of sterile insects are released. The released insects are normally male as it is the female that causes the damage, usually by laying eggs in the crop, or, in the case of mosquitoes, taking a bloodmeal (SIT) of the integrated management of Screw-Worm Fly control in conjunction with the International Atomic Energy Agency International Atomic Energy Agency: see Atomic Energy Agency, International.
