McCarthy's reference to Murrow's efforts on behalf of Soviet communist "educators" at the Institute for International Education as well as his cited membership in the International Workers of the World were not "ad hominem" attacks on Murrow. They revealed quite cogently the leftist left·ism also Left·ism n. 1. The ideology of the political left. 2. Belief in or support of the tenets of the political left. left proclivities of the CBS commentator.
