Redline Communications Brings Portable Broadband Connectivity to Nuclear Weapons Site Decommissioning.

TORONTO -- CH2M Hill Selects Redline's AN-50 Wireless Broadband System for Nomadic PTP and PMP Backhaul, VoIP and Data Connectivity

Redline Communications Inc., a leading provider of standards-based broadband wireless equipment, today announced that its award-winning AN-50 wireless broadband system has been deployed by CH2M HILL to provide point-to-point (PTP) and point-to-multipoint (PMP) communications for a major nuclear deactivation and decommissioning project at its Rocky Flats facility in Golden, Colorado. The extremely low latency AN-50 enables backhaul for VoIP and data connectivity links, and meets the project's rapid deployment and portability requirements.

CH2M HILL is a leading engineering, consulting and program management company for secure facilities, including selected U.S. Department of Energy's nuclear sites. The Rocky Flats Plant project is part of a national nuclear weapons complex and a former site for nuclear weapon production. CH2M HILL, an affiliate of Kaiser-Hill, was engaged to provide the communications infrastructure for the project, which is scheduled for completion in 2006.

"Part of the project requires the removal of traditional copper and fiber infrastructure, and turning off local leased lines and power in buildings scheduled for demolition, while continuing to provide data and voice services. We needed a wireless system that was completely fluid and nomadic, and could also provide robust, high performance broadband services," said Kelly Guthner, CTO for CH2M HILL, Rocky Flats Project. "There were many challenges to overcome, including elevation differences, line-of-sight constraints, and extremely stringent security and latency requirements. Redline had the only system that addressed all those needs, while offering both PTP and PMP connectivity in one unit. CH2M HILL is now able to apply the knowledge, technology and lessons learned to other projects worldwide."

"While the site was using a combination of fiber and 802.11 for communications, the former was very expensive to maintain and move, while the latter provided only limited coverage, had technology limitations and bandwidth restrictions, and did not meet security requirements. Some other broadband solutions were not even channelized and therefore used up the entire available spectrum," added Niel Goetz, network operations manager for CH2M HILL, Rocky Flats Project. "We needed a solution that could deliver the bandwidth, low latency, security and frequency management to provide complete wireless connectivity for everything from data and legacy voice to VoIP services, while providing us with room to grow when needed. It even has the capability to support our future transition to mobile applications when the demolition is complete and the project enters its final restoration stage."

AN-50s are being used for both PTP and PMP links. Two of the PMP links are co-located on a central tower for full 360 degrees coverage. A total of 25 units are currently installed, servicing 17 subscriber stations located in mobile trailers, allowing full encrypted broadband connectivity and VoIP for the more than 400 field workers on the project.
