Hurricane Frances was the sixth named storm, the fourth hurricane, and the third major hurricane of the 2004 Atlantic hurricane season.

The fundraising effort is being led by Phil Jacobs, president of BellSouth Georgia Operations, who today is calling on corporate colleagues and the Georgia business community to make urgent financial commitments. According to according to

 Jacobs, the double strike of hurricanes Frances and Charley could result in unprecedented relief needs - needs that the Red Cross must as always provide.

"It's critical that business leaders step up as Hurricane Frances approaches. Georgia companies have many thousands of customers and employees who may feel the storm's impact in some way, and they always have been generous during times of natural disaster," said Jacobs. "We're facing an extraordinary situation that requires extraordinary action. The Red Cross needs our financial support right now."

The last time two major hurricanes hit Florida in rapid succession was 1950. Hurricane Easy There have been several hurricanes designated Easy when the initial naming system was used (the Phonetic alphabet).

 struck Tampa around September 4 of that year, and Hurricane King Hurricane King was the 11th tropical storm and the last of a record-setting eight major hurricanes in the 1950 Atlantic hurricane season. It made landfall at Miami, Florida with winds of over 100 mph, and caused extensive damage in the vicinity. In all, Hurricane King caused $232.  hit Miami six weeks later on October 17.

The Georgia Disaster Campaign Cabinet will seek large financial contributions from corporate donors, paving the way for families and individuals to provide financial support as well. "Put yourself in the place of a family who has just evacuated from their home, and may now be in a shelter or hotel somewhere in Georgia," said Jacobs. "They are anxious, nervous and scared. Their homes may be gone when they return. We all must step up and help today."
