Recycle Mania strikes campuses. (Back Page).


The second annual "Recycle Mania" contest has come to a close with a new champion--Bowling Green State University (BGSU BGSU Bowling Green State University

) in Bowling Green, Ohio Bowling Green is the county seat of Wood CountyGR6 in the U.S. state of Ohio. At the time of the 2000 census, the population of Bowling Green was 29,636. It is part of the Toledo, Ohio Metropolitan Statistical Area. .

Last year the contest pitted two universities in Ohio against each other to see which set of students could recycle the largest volume of containers, paper and other recyclables. Athens is a historic college town in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Ohio, best known as the home of Ohio University.
, and Miami University, Oxford, Ohio.

BGSU won "Recycle Mania 2002" with an average weight of 48 pounds of recyclables collected per student living on campus, while OU had a final weight of 46.6 pounds per student. Miami University was third with 45.7 pounds per student and Harvard University finished last with an average of 38.9 pounds per student. Combined, the four schools collected almost 625 tons of recyclables.

"Ohio University processed 108,418 pounds more recyclables this year than last year," notes OU recycling manager Ed Newman.
