Texas Chapter, National Science Foundation, Society of Manufacturing Engineers The Society of Manufacturing Engineers [1] (SME) is dedicated to bringing people and information together to advance manufacturing knowledge. SME is internationally recognized by manufacturing practitioners, companies and other organizations as a source for information,  and the Foundry Educational Foundation. The purpose of this workshop was to expose participants to the university environment in hope of encouraging them to pursue a college education after graduating from high school,

The students participated in programs and classes covering subjects such as manufacturing engineering, physics, writing, mathematics and leadership training. Students designed parts on CAD systems, built rapid prototype patterns and made castings in the lab. A few were chosen to pour castings, an experience they talked about throughout the entire workshop.

The workshop focused on tying a number of technical areas together to show students how mathematics, science and engineering combine to advance society. The main goal was to interest the students in pursuing a college education with special emphasis on manufacturing engineering.
