"CHALKIE Von Schmidt? A spy?" There's some awfully bad news for the RAF pilots this week in another bunch of very likeable sketches from Ben Miller and Alexander Armstrong.

Agreat old running gag makes a welcome return and a new character is introduced.

It's a royal correspondent who knows absolutely nothing about what the royals might be doing, eating or thinking, but is nevertheless very happy to appear on rolling news channels and speculate about what he doesn't know at great length.

It would be nice to see the pair introduce even more new characters like this one to keep things fresh.

Jim (the loser dumped on his wedding day for the DJ) pops up again tonight and the happy honeymooners probably aren't the only ones groaning now every time they see his face.

Other bright spots include a warning about the danger of wearing T-shirts with writing on them.

Meanwhile, the Neanderthals name a baby and we're reminded of what a very dangerous decade the Seventies must have been by way of another terrifying ter·ri·fy

HAVE I GOT NEWS FOR YOU BBC1, 9pm

WOMEN have always been under-represented on Have I Got News For You (last week's appearance by frockwearing artist Grayson Perry notwithstanding).

So it's great to see the comedienne and actress, and the tallest woman in comedy, Miranda Hart, taking her first spin in the presenter's chair.

Already a familiar face from comedies like Angelo's, Hyperdrive hy·per·drive

2. Informal A state of heightened activity or concentration.
and playing the cleaning lady in Not Going Out, Miranda is now going to have her very own sitcom - based on her Radio 2 series Funny Girl.

It will be starting soon on BBC2.

She's been on Have I Got News For You's panel before, so has no trouble holding her own against captains Ian Hislop and Paul Merton.

His new film, An Education, set in London in the Sixties, is out today. But what's the betting that Jonathan brings Dominic down to earth by reminding him how he once starred in an ad for condoms? And for one night only, the Four Poofs and their piano have been given the night off to go trick-or-treating, because Jonathan's very special house band will be none other than The Stylistics stylistics

EARLY SHOW FOR KIDS

AUTUMNWATCH BBC2, 8.30pm

IF you've been grumbling that Autumnwatch has been on too late this season for your kids to enjoy, the BBC has listened to you.

From this week and for the rest of the series, it's been moved forward half an hour to 8.30pm.

There's a distinct Hallowe'en flavour to tonight's nature spotting as Kate Humble and Chris Packham head to a spooky Gloucestershire mansion - looking not for ghosts, but for badgers, bats and spiders.

Meanwhile, Simon King is in London, meeting some animals who have made a graveyard their home.
