Recognizing northern excellence.


Is yours an exceptional business? Are you successful entrepreneur? An innovative young business owner? Or, a student whose dream is to launch a new enterprise in Northern Ontario Northern Ontario is the part of the province of Ontario which lies north of Lake Huron (including Georgian Bay), the French River and Lake Nipissing.

If so, you may qualify for a prestigious Northern Ontario Business Northern Ontario Business is a Canadian magazine, which publishes monthly in Greater Sudbury, Ontario. The magazine covers business news and issues in Northern Ontario.  Award, and now is the time to submit a nomination. Details are available at www.noba.ca.

Nominations are open to companies and individuals who have had a fixed presence in Northern Ontario for at least the last three years. For the purposes of NOBA, Northern Ontario is measured from Parry Sound Parry Sound, town (1991 pop. 6,125), S Ont., Canada, on Parry Sound, an inlet of Georgian Bay of Lake Huron. There are nine categories.

Company of the Year (in each of three levels: 1 to 15, 16 to 50, and 51+ employees) is extensively engaged in business activities in the region. The business must have operated for at least one year since completing a major expansion or receiving government financing.

Entrepreneur of the Year is a person who has founded or purchased a Northern Ontario-based business. The Young Entrepreneur of the Year is 35 or younger on October 6, 2005. S/he has founded or purchased a Northern Ontario-based business.

In the entrepreneur categories, preference will be given to those who successfully continue to create, recreate or purchase businesses. Not-for-profit groups, government agencies and institutions are not considered businesses, but are eligible for the Entrepreneurial Community of the Year Award.

The Entrepreneurial Community of the Year is a non-profit or charitable group, government agency or institution defined by geography or association, which collaborates by sharing human and/or capital resources to create conditions which affect economic growth or development in Northern Ontario.

The First Nations Business Award will be presented to a status First Nations person(s) operating or managing a business on or off a reserve.

The Innovation Award is presented to a person or company employing new or experimental technology or techniques resulting in the development of new products, services or internal processes, or significant improvement to existing products, services or processes. Preference will be given to people/companies continually developing innovative technology or techniques.

The Judges' Choice Award is presented to a nominee nominee n. 1) a person or entity who is requested or named to act for another, such as an agent or trustee. 2) a potential successor to another's rights under a contract.  chosen by the adjudication The legal process of resolving a dispute. The formal giving or pronouncing of a judgment or decree in a court proceeding; also the judgment or decision given. Essay contest for students

A feature of the awards program is the annual student scholarship. Sponsored by Union Gas and administered by NOBA, the theme of this year's high school essay competition is "Leadership & Volunteerism vol·un·teer·ism

A $3,000 post-secondary-school scholarship will be earned by a student who submits the winning 2,500-word composition. To be eligible, students must be registered for post-secondary education in 2005, and currently attend high school in Northern Ontario.

The goal of the essay contest is to encourage Northern youth to continue their education and to remain in Northern Ontario. Union Gas has sponsored the contest for nearly two decades.

Sudbury plays host

Plans are already underway for the 2005 Northern Ontario Business Awards (NOBA) gala, which will attract more than 500 movers and shakers Shakers, popular name for members of the United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing, also called the Millennial Church. Members of the movement, who received their name from the trembling produced by religious emotion, were also known as Alethians.  from around the North. NOBA positively impacts the future of its award winners, and they are publicly recognized for building and growing our Northern communities.
