Recognizing achievement.

As you are finalizing plans for the new school year, remember to incorporate MTNA's Music Achievement Award Program into your curriculum.

The Music Achievement Award Program, first introduced five years ago, is based on this premise: A simple form of encouragement often is all that is needed for students, especially those "everyday" students, to continue music lessons. In addition, the program provides teachers with a means to encourage students to seek a well-rounded education beyond the private lesson.

Similar to the badge programs used by both the Girl and Boy Scouts Boy Scouts, organization of boys 11 to 17 years old, founded (1907) in Great Britain by Sir Robert (later Lord) Baden-Powell. It was incorporated in 1910 in the United States, where its appearance was connected with earlier organizations—the Sons of Daniel , the MTNA MTNA Music Teachers National Association

Music Achievement Award Program rewards the accomplishment of goals. A specific set of criteria, determined by the teacher and approved by the parents/guardians, must be met to earn the award. "I believe that these new suggestions and the grouping into musical areas provide an opportunity for a more broad-based musical education," explains Higgins.

Studies have shown a direct link between the length of music study and the place music occupies in the future lives of music students.

The Achievement Award Program was based on the belief that music teachers need to find a way for music lessons to capture and hold children's interests, much like sport teams have done. More often than not, budding budding, type of grafting in which a plant bud is inserted under the bark of the stock (usually not more than a year old). It is best done when the bark will peel easily and the buds are mature, as in spring, late summer, or early autumn.  athletes are rewarded just for being part of the team, regardless of their individual performance or the team's performance. Sometimes the reward is as simple as a pizza party for everyone; other times it may be ribbons or trophies for each team member. For many youngsters, this gesture is enough to make them want to play the next season. In the same way, everyone wins when students keep coming back for more and more music lessons--the students, the teachers and the musical life of our nation.

"It is my hope that the program will help students to become better musicians by enhancing their love and appreciation of music through studio projects and involvement within the community--hopefully, for a lifetime." says Higgins.

A Music Achievement Award implementation packet is available free of charge through the national headquarters. These may be purchased through MTNA for a nominal fee.

The initial program was developed in 2002 by R. Wayne Gibson, NCTM, who was MTNA's president at the time, with the creative assistance of Aurelia Campbell, NCTM, an independent music teacher from Georgia.
