Fellowship Provides Funding for Two-Year Graduate Student Program at Purdue's Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance

Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq:SYMC), the global leader in information security, today announced that the recipient of the second Symantec Fellowship has been named by Purdue University's Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security (CERIAS). Through its University Research Program, Symantec now provides support for two graduate students pursuing studies in computer security at CERIAS.

Mr. Mahesh Tripunitara was awarded the fellowship at the annual CERIAS Spring Symposium held last week on the West Lafayette, Ind., campus of Purdue University. He joins Miss Abhilasha Bhargav, recipient of the first Symantec Fellowship that was awarded at last year's Symposium. Mr. Tripunitara's two-year term for the Fellowship will begin this Fall for the 2004-2005 school year. Each Symantec Fellowship provides up to $50,000 to cover the full tuition costs for two years and a stipend for a degree-seeking student enrolled at Purdue and working with CERIAS.

Mr. Tripunitara was one of approximately 82 students who were accepted into the graduate program in Purdue's School of Computer Science, out of more than 650 students who applied. He received a Bachelor's degree in computer science from Dalhousie University, Halifax, Canada, and a Master's degree also in computer science from Purdue University. He returned to Purdue University and CERIAS in 2003 to resume his studies and is on track to complete his Ph.D. in computer science in May 2006.

The relationship between Purdue University and Symantec is a continuation of other efforts by Symantec's University Research Program to support academic research of Internet security. Symantec is also a partner of Carnegie Mellon University's CyLab, a comprehensive research and education center established to create a partnership between academia, government and industry-based organizations to develop technologies and capabilities to enhance cyber security for home users and enterprises. In addition, Symantec is a sponsor of Stanford University's Computer Forum. Finally, Symantec has provided funding and support to the University of Auckland, New Zealand's largest university, for the establishment of an information security laboratory.

Symantec's University Research Program was established to facilitate and coordinate Symantec's involvement with universities that emphasize research and study in the Internet security field. Aside from monetary support through Fellowships, Symantec supports universities by offering corporate spokespersons for seminars and lectures to students and faculties. In addition, Symantec provides feedback on the research conducted by universities and input on areas that the industry deems important to help direct the focus of study by universities on Internet security issues.
