I am fortunate, however, to have largely focused on a demographic whose budget guidelines might very. well temper any pending economic storm.

Yes. In the past month I have been researching and checking my investments to try to hedge against what I perceive as if not a downward trend at least volatility that's going to cause hardships and problems. I lost some money in certain kinds of investments that had been doing well--some home mortgage companies. I'm trying to get more in safer vehicles.

In order to keep our economy growing, America must get serious about developing technologies and products that will significantly lessen our dependency on foreign oil and reduce emissions.

Yes, the mortgage market and resulting volatility have created some concerns, but it's just a minor blip on the radar screen. No, not at all. For starters, the trouble in subprime markets can be interpreted as an incentive for institutions to diversify into other markets as well as create new markets, which will be a good thing. Meanwhile, increasing stock market volatility is part of a long-term trend that is not going away, thanks in part to continuing growth and operations of hedge funds hedge fund, in finance, a highly speculative, largely unregulated investment device. Originating in the 1950s, the funds "hedge" by offsetting "short" positions (borrowing a security and then selling it at a higher price before repaying the lender) against "long"  and financial innovations including derivatives.

. The job data shows little unemployment change since last year. I don't think the subprime crisis has a broad-based impact on today's economy. I do, however, have more concerns about the continuous growth in the country's debt burden and how this will impact the long-term prosperity of the country.
