"All I know about trees is that I like to look at them," Van Kleeck says.

In 2004, in less than three weeks, Van Kleeck's home was hit by two hurricanes. The house is gone now, but the majestic oaks stand, still impressively encompassing the property.

And therein lies the dilemma: How to maintain as many of the trees as possible during rebuilding while complying with upgraded building codes and regulations.

To fit a new home in between the trees, Van Kleeck says, it appears he will have to move one of his beloved live oaks. He is trying to find someone to move it to a new location. Utility lines present a problem because the sprawling live oak has an estimated 45-foot canopy. A neighborhood location that would bypass the power lines was sought, but a neighbor who expressed interest worried whether the tree would survive transplanting transplanting, in horticulture, the process of removing a plant from the place where it has been growing and replanting it in another. The major requirement in transplanting (especially of larger plants) is a sufficient water supply, since the roots are almost .

At press time Van Kleeck was waiting to hear from a half-dozen people who expressed an interest in the tree. A builder is also interested in moving the tree to a new subdivision. Construction is set to begin on Van Kleeck's home near the end of April.
