Rebates for adapting your vehicle.Something your auto dealer may not tell you: The 3 major U.S. automobile manufacturers have generous programs in place to assist buyers who need to adapt their vehicles. If the salespeople don't quite "get it" yet, the auto companies understand that people who use mobility devices also buy cars. The Big 3 now offer a wide array of adaptable trucks and minivans. General Motors has already racked up 39,000 sales through their mobility program. General Motors, Chrysler Corporation, and Ford each have hotlines for their programs. The customer must buy a new vehicle and adaptive equipment, and arrange for the necessary modifications. The programs may give referrals for equipment suppliers and installation. The customer then submits receipts and paperwork to get the offered rebate, which can range from $750 to $1,000. Eligible adaptations allow a person with a disability to get in and out of a vehicle, to drive it, or to be safely driven. This could include lifts, ramps, hand-controls, and warning devices for people with hearing problems. If you are in the market for a new vehicle, and you or a family member needs adaptive equipment to fully use it, consult an occupational therapist (OT) to figure out exactly what kind of modifications and equipment will be most useful. You will then be well-equipped to talk turkey with the local car dealers, and make the wisest decision about your next purchase. |
