J. J. Keller determined that repetitious updating, redundant processes and inaccessible content had become obstacles to realizing sales opportunities in new markets. They also had become hurdles for developing new online content as well as software and print products. In an effort to become more efficient and therefore better positioned to meet these opportunities, J. J. Keller sought assistance in eliminating content redundancy across print publications, defining workflow changes, evaluating and implementing an appropriate content management system to support single sourcing, and choosing and implementing a new print composition system. Really Strategies and J. J. Keller embarked on a three-phase project, implementing a content management system that will enable J. J. Keller to meet its publishing goals.

Really Strategies worked with J. J. Keller to identify requirements and solutions for all aspects of its new single-source content management system and integrated the system components. After pilot-testing two representative looseleaf books, J. J. Keller is now putting publications through the entire workflow--converting publications to XML, loading XML into the content management system, updating the content, and producing composed pages from XML. "J. J. Keller is addressing major publishing challenges," stated Mark Jacobson, senior content engineer at Really Strategies. "Legal and regulatory publishing is driven by changes and updates to laws and regulation as well as customers' expectations of timely content. J. J. Keller's looseleaf publications presented unique challenges, including managing a defined number of changed pages for each update. It's quite a complicated editorial workflow and process."

Content was converted to XML and Documentum was implemented to split XML content into reusable objects according to customer-defined rules. Additionally, page composition has been automated using XyEnterprise's XML Professional Publisher as the batch composition engine.

"When we converted our books to desktop publishing 12 years ago, the process was painful and full of uncertainty. This time around - despite much higher complexity and a much larger investment - we had a clearer understanding of what we wanted to accomplish and what it would take to do so," stated Webb Shaw, director of editorial resources at J. The first iteration of the system has been deployed and editorial and production staffs are extremely pleased with the initial results.
