Real story on St. Joseph: St. Joseph today is very different from the one portrayed by medieval painters.

St. Joseph, in the eyes of Pope John Paul Pope John Paul is the name of two Popes of the Roman Catholic Church:
  • Pope John Paul I (1978), who named himself in honor of his predecessors, Pope John XXIII and Pope Paul VI. Reigned for only 34 calendar days
  • Pope John Paul II (1978–2005), the only Polish Pope.
, is above all the man "to whose custody God entrusted his most precious treasures," Jesus the Incarnate Word and Mary, the Mother of the Incarnate Word. What greater honour could anyone ever have? What greater responsibility?

The Gospel portrait--brief as it is--presents Joseph as the "just" man: "her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to send her away quietly" (Mt. 1: 19). But then an angel appeared to him in a dream and explained to him that what was conceived in Mary "is of the Holy Spirit." And so Joseph was the first to be introduced to the "mystery of Mary's motherhood." He showed that readiness of will, like Mary's, to do what God asked him through the Angel.

Joseph becomes the unique guardian of that mystery "hidden for ages in God" (Eph 3:9). Together with Mary "he shares in the final phase of God's self-revelation in Christ."

As for the nature of the marriage, both St. Augustine and St. Thomas always identify it with an "indivisible INDIVISIBLE. That which cannot be separated.

Since it is inconceivable that the sublime task of guardianship and fatherhood would not be matched by the necessary qualities to adequately fill it, we must recognize that Joseph shows Jesus "by a special gift from heaven, all the natural love, all the affectionate solicitude so·lic·i·tude

Through all these years Joseph had the task of "raising Jesus", that is, feeding, clothing and educating him in the Law and in the carpenter's trade.
