For the first time in its 26-year history, the annual Survey of Public Participation in the Arts shows that literary reading (defined as reading any novel, short story, poem, or play) has risen among adult Americans. A new report from the National Endowment A transfer, generally as a gift, of money or property to an institution for a particular purpose. The bestowal of money as a permanent fund, the income of which is to be used for the benefit of a charity, college, or other institution.  for the Arts examines this survey, and also finds that while the absolute number of book-reading adults grew from 2002 to 2008, the number of book-reading adults as a percentage of the U.S. population declined.
