Reading "Between the Lions".


The Barksdale Reading Institute and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) is a private non-profit corporation which is chartered and funded by the United States Federal Government to promote public broadcasting.

The CPB was created on November 7, 1967 when U.S. president Lyndon B.
 recently announced that they will provide a total of $11 million for two new seasons of the award-winning show "Between the Lions Between the Lions is a PBS children's puppet show designed to promote reading. The show is a co-production between WGBH in Boston and Sirius Thinking, Ltd., in New York City, in association with Mississippi Public Broadcasting. ," which inspires children's imaginations and sets the stage for a lifelong love of reading.

The show is produced by WGBH Boston, Sirius Thinking, and Mississippi Public Broadcasting Mississippi Public Broadcasting is the public broadcasting network in Mississippi. Owned by the Mississippi Authority for Educational Television, it holds the licenses for all of the PBS and NPR stations in the state.  to target children aged four to seven with a combination of phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, and reading aloud. Several independent studies over the past four years demonstrated that the use of "Between the Lions" with high-poverty, high-risk children in Mississippi, Kansas, and New Mexico significantly improved their reading skills.

The show has garnered numerous accolades, including a Daytime Emmy Award The Daytime Emmy Awards are awards presented by the New York-based National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and the Los Angeles-based Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in recognition of excellence in American daytime television programming.  for Outstanding Writing in a Children's Series and the Television Critics Association The Television Critics Association (or TCA) is a group of approximately 200 United States and Canadian journalists and columnists who cover television programming. They meet in the Los Angeles area twice a year, in January and July, in conferences known as Winter and Summer  Award for Outstanding Achievement in Children's Programming. Likened by some to an updated version of "Sesame Street," the program features a family of literary lions--Leo, Cleo, Lionel, and Leona--who share a love of reading. Each episode stresses the sounds of letter and letter combinations and is accompanied by on-screen on·screen or on-screen

The new seasons will build upon past episodes with new stories, animated segments, and songs. "In seasons seven and eight, we will be focusing more broadcast time on vocabulary development, which research is consistently showing to be a key factor in children's ability to comprehend text," says Christopher Cerf, show co-creator and co-founder of Sirius Thinking.
