The mind reels

The Spring 2000 edition of InsideMS is a treasure of truth! "MS and the Mind" made me feel like someone had been spying spying: see espionage.
Spying

The illustrations by David Hollenbach spoke so well of the cranial/ emotional confusion brought on by MS. David showed both the "Oh, you look so good!" face along with reality. I've gone through 2 career changes, and each became a failure because of people problems largely caused by the type of cognitive problems described in your excerpts and articles. No one would believe they were MS-caused! I kept searching for MS research to back up my theories, but found none. Finally, I gave up, retired, and decided the world would never catch up with my problems. Your special section says there is now hope. Thank you. I hope this will not be a one-time coverage, and that your experts will evaluate and work with educators specializing in right brain/left brain research.

A voice to sing with

At an MS Walk, I met Terry. She asked me what my hope was for an MS cure. I said I hoped I would be able to speak more clearly. She said she took singing lessons. That sounded like a good idea to me. Terry said, "I will introduce you to my voice teacher." I have now been taking voice lessons for 3 years. The essence of singing is knowing how to breathe correctly. That is why I take voice lessons. I feel it is very important that I do something for myself.

Sheen doesn't shine

In the Spring 2000 edition, there is an article about a fictional character portrayed por·tray

I love my life

I'm not sure if you have ever heard this before, but I am glad that I have MS. It saved my soul. I joined AA and found out that there is a God, but I wasn't Him! I am from the same state that Dr. Kevorkian comes from [see Winter 2000, page 47] but he would have trouble relying on people like me for future customers. I love my life, my faith, my family, my friends, and my AA program. It truly can't get any better than this!

A failing grade

I am not, in any way, writing this letter to you to say that I dislike your magazine. My 37-year-old mother was diagnosed 2 summers ago with MS. At first, I was very scared. In sixth grade last year, I did a report on MS. After my report, I was still very confused, so I read many articles from your magazine. To my surprise, there are no stories of how people are still achieving their goals, still having fun, and still living their life to the fullest even though they have MS. Now, just imagine being a 12-year-old and everything you read is about how horrible MS is! Yes, I know that they are the facts, but your magazine is very depressing. You need to publish more hopeful stories, so that people with MS have some faith in themselves and not fear.
