Feedback on teen issue I really enjoyed reading Teen InsideMS in the Fall issue. One article particularly stood out: "In My World Everyone Understands", by Heidi Krattiger. I'm 12 years old and my mom has had MS for 15 years. I know she can't help that she has it, but I still "break down" when all of my friends get to go to the mall, the beach, or even just apple picking, and I can't. I empathize em·pa·thize

completely with Heidi. Like she said, our friends just don't understand.

I have MS, and am the parent of a 6-year-old. I found it extremely helpful just to know that there were other families out there sharing some of our same struggles. I often feel so isolated. I just wanted to extend a big thank-you to everyone involved.

How I wish there'd been a teen MS magazine for me. I'm 33 now and was 2 when my dad was diagnosed, and reading your teen issue brought memories flooding back. I, too, made meatloaf and cookies with my dad, took on many additional chores, and felt as if other kids didn't know or understand what I was going through. I'm glad the National MS Society is there not only for those with MS, but for their children as well. I hope these kids never feel as alone as I did.

More mobility strategies

My sister-in-law has had MS for more than 10 years, and her mobility has steadily declined. This past spring she signed up for a low-impact exercise class that focuses on stretching, flexing, and strength. The exercises are performed while seated in a chair, and within one week she experienced mobility improvement. She soon rejected her scooter and strolled into classes using her walker. Many of her classmates Classmates can refer to either:
  • Classmates.com, a social networking website.
  • Classmates (film), a 2006 Malayalam blockbuster directed by Lal Jose, starring Prithviraj, Jayasurya, Indragith, Sunil, Jagathy, Kavya Madhavan, Balachandra Menon, ...
also said they felt less stiff and had more energy and strength. And--though I don't have MS--I, too, enjoy the classes and feel the benefits.

I was especially interested in the information about dogs trained to help people with mobility problems, published in the Fall issue's Readers Write section. This is a wonderful option I'd not been aware of. Since my balance is poor, this is something I am going to pursue.

Businesses beware!

I am a "baby boomer baby boomer also ba·by-boom·er

Pretty soon we'll be the "older" generation, using canes, crutches, walkers, scooters, wheelchairs, etc.--and I'm pretty sure we're going to shop at stores that have made accommodations for us and made us feel welcome.

People with disabilities have been asking businesses to become more accessible for some time, and businesses have been balking balking, baulking

Instead of spending their money on lawyers trying to figure out ways how not to comply with the ADA Ada, city, United States

A rolling resource

In the Fall 2000 issue of InsideMS we ran a special section on Mobility, in which we referred readers to an especially useful Web site: <www.wheelchairnet.org>.

WheelchairNet is a community--visited, built, and managed by people who have an interest in wheelchairs. It contains sections on wheelchair selection, proper use, ways to fund a purchase, chat rooms, and Wheelchair University--which offers lectures, articles, and book excerpts.

We incorrectly attributed creation of this site to Dr. Joseph Herbert. It was created by the Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center (RERC RERC Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center
RERC Real Estate Research Corporation
) on Wheeled Mobility at the University of Pittsburgh through a 5-year grant from the National Institute for Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR NIDRR National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (US Department of Education) ).
