DANCES MAR COMPETITION We are writing to you at this time to express our disappointment and concern regarding the quality of dancing that is being accepted at some dance competitions in our area. Our children recently completed our dance competition season, and we were alarmed at the number of entries that had sexual overtones. Due to the age of the children involved, both performing and in the audience, we feel these were extremely inappropriate. These numbers included sexually explicit costuming as well as sexual overtures o·ver·ture n. 1. Music a. An instrumental composition intended especially as an introduction to an extended work, such as an opera or oratorio. b. . We are fully aware that dance is a form of expression; however, a performer should be aware of his audience ... We are writing to you at this time with the hope of sharing our concerns with others who feel as we do. Maybe if we stick together we can persuade these organizations to raise their standards. If we don't watch out for our children and keep their best interests in mind, who will? Gina Chiavelli, Director, Pinewood pine·wood n. 1. The wood of the pine tree. 2. A forest of pines. NOT YOUR TYPE? Is it me and my "old eyes," or am I correct when I say that your new editorial format is impossible to read! The print is so small I've given up even attempting to try to get through a single article. I realize that many of your readers are young student dancers, but there must be a few of us older folk out there (retired dancers and teachers) who would love to keep in touch with what's happening in the dance world if only we could read the small print! This magazine used to be fun to read; now it's such a chore! Maya via email PENNSYLVANIA BALLET The Pennsylvania Ballet is a ballet company in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, established in 1963 by Barbara Weisberger. The company became a regionally important institution, and performed in New York for the first time in 1968. Your article detailing the sale of the Pennsylvania Ballet Center to the Rock School of Pennsylvania contains several inaccuracies, including: 1. The Rock School is receiving a $1,000,000 capital grant for capital purposes, not $1,500,000 as reported. 2. Pennsylvania Ballet is not receiving $500,000 of a $1,500,000 capital grant awarded to the School for operating costs operating costs npl → gastos mpl operacionales . This would be illegal. 3. The "original deal," as Mr. Sylk refers to it, did not protect the Pennsylvania Ballet name. The deal to sell the Ballet Center, ultimately approved by the board, includes a trademark license agreement which provides the ballet with controls over quality at the school and gives the ballet the right to deny use of its name in the event that standards of quality are not adhered to. Mr. Sylk's deal, which did not enjoy the support of the board, did not address this issue. Michael Scolamiero Executive Director, Pennsylvania Ballet Editor's note: Bojan Spassof director of the Rock School, quoted the capital grant figure as $1 million, then later amended his statement by saying that the $! million was to be used for repairs to the school, while the $500,000 was allocated to PB's operating budget Noun 1. operating budget - a budget for current expenses as distinct from financial transactions or permanent improvements budget items, operating cost, operating expense, overhead - the expense of maintaining property (e.g. .
