Dear Editor:

Larry Tyler's article, "Moving on up to CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board. ?" in the September/October issue of The Physician Executive was excellent. It provided the right perspective, was clear and concise, and had a great list of what to do next. I agree with Larry's recommendation on the Center for Creative Leadership. I attended two of their courses. Sometimes your ego gets bruised, but you learn a lot.

Sincerely,

Dennis Mih ale, MD

Change agents are also leaders

While the article by Paul Plsek and Charles Kilo, MD, MPH, "A Different Approach to Change" (volume 25, issue # 6) is hardly ground breaking, indeed charmingly homespun, it incisively and realistically characterizes change agents. Points 7 through 9 listed in the table on page 42 actually highlight leadership characteristics, suggesting that change agents are also leaders. It is a warm endorsement of the constructivist approach, and at the same time, a gentle condemnation of the deconstructivist (and destructive) approach to management.

No doubt in organizations aligned with America's enterprising free spirit, change agents and leaders prosper. But what of organizations more akin to the former USSR USSR: see Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. , and indeed Russia of today? In such environments, change agents are marginalized, demonized, driven to suicide, or otherwise got rid of. Leaders are not welcome. Believe me: I speak from experience. Best wishes for success.
