Reaching out: Fuchs scrap handlers help Columbus Metal Industries reach its production goals.

Sam Jacobs, owner and president of Columbus Metal Industries, Columbus, Neb., has helped manage his company's steady growth over the past several years. Guided by Sam and company general manager Brian Dolesh, the company has used what Sam calls "a great maintenance program" to get long life and reliability from its scrap handlers handlers

.

In part because of Columbus Metal Industries' success with machinery, Sam says he was reluctant to accept the trial use of a Fuchs Model 350 scrap handler A software routine that performs a particular task. It often refers to a routine that "handles" an exception of some kind, such as an error, but it can refer to mainstream processes as well. The term is typically used in operating systems and other system software.  last year when approached by his long-time equipment dealer, Roadbuilders, Omaha, Neb.

"We actually had to be talked into trying it out, but after just a few days it became apparent why Roadbuilders was anxious for us to try it," says Sam. "We had it for just a week-and-a-half before we negotiated to buy a new one, and we insisted that they couldn't have the demo demo - /de'moh/ 1. A demonstration of a product, often of an early version or prototype. A demo is a far more effective way of inducing bugs to manifest themselves than any number of test runs, especially when important people are watching.

back until our new one came in," he quips.

Columbus Metal Industries now has two Fuchs 350 machines on the job, both mobile machines on wheels. Sam cites several reasons why the machines have gained favor with operators and managers.

"The Fuchs 350 has a lot more reach than we're used to--about 50 feet instead of 35," he notes. "The cab is comfortable and a little more spacious for our operators, and the elevated cab reaches higher than other brands we have owned, making their job that much easier when feeding our shredder and shear shear: see strength of materials.

The mobility of the wheeled machines and their ability to change out attachments in just a few minutes makes them suitable for the multiple tasks they may be asked to perform in a given day. "The 50-foot reach helps tremendously," says Sam. "It allows our operators to build bigger, reachable stockpiles near the processing equipment, so if you can move material once instead of twice, you are saving time and money."

The company operates several scrap handling machines at both its Columbus and Kearney, Neb., locations, so Sam says he expects to see more blue Fuchs machines on the job as the company replaces any aging scrap handlers that are due for an upgrade.
