Re the "Quebec nineteen" (priests).Open letter to: Mgr. Jacques Berthelet, C.S.V. (Diocese de Saint-Jean-Longucuil); Mgr. Roger Ebacher (Archevehe de Gatineau); Mgr. Jean Gagnon (Diocese de Gaspe); Mgr. Gilles Lussier (Diocese de Joliette); M. le Cardinal Jean-Claude Turcotte Jean-Claude Cardinal Turcotte (born June 26, 1936) is a Roman Catholic cardinal and Archbishop of MontrĂ©al. His full title is "Cardinal of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament and the Holy Canadian Martyrs. (Archeveche de Montreal) Question: Do the nineteen priests in your dioceses who "express their disagreement with two ecclesial Ec`cle´si`al a. 1. Ecclesiastical. interventions concerning civil marriage of same-sex persons and access to the priesthood" fully understand the Catholic Church's teaching on homosexuality? Also, do they understand that genuine compassion cannot be divorced from the truth (cf. John Paul II John Paul II, 1920–2005, pope (1978–2005), a Pole (b. Wadowice) named Karol Józef Wojtyła; successor of John Paul I. He was the first non-Italian pope elected since the Dutch Adrian VI (1522–23) and the first Polish and Slavic pope. , encyclical letter Noun 1. encyclical letter - a letter from the pope sent to all Roman Catholic bishops throughout the world encyclical letter, missive - a written message addressed to a person or organization; "mailed an indignant letter to the editor" Veritatis splendor, no. 95)? These priests are calling for "a dialogue within the Church on all the issues concerning homosexuality" and they are hoping "that Christians are listening to the life experiences of their homosexual brothers and sisters." Well and good. Meanwhile, such a dialogue will not be fruitful unless it is founded upon the reality that it is not the Church of Jesus that must conform herself to this age. Rather it is the faithful of this age who must conform themselves to the teachings of the Church (cf. Romans 121:2) which, in faith and moral matters, are immutable IMMUTABLE. What cannot be removed, what is unchangeable. The laws of God being perfect, are immutable, but no human law can be so considered. ("Anyone who listens to you listens to me," Luke 10:16). The open letter by the nineteen priests is a golden opportunity for us to put into practice the directives of the Apostle Paul: "Proclaim the word; be persistent whether it is convenient or inconvenient; convince, reprimand REPRIMAND, punishment. The censure which in some cases a public office pronounces against an offender. 2. This species of punishment is used by legislative bodies to punish their members or others who have been guilty of some impropriety of conduct towards them. , encourage all through patience and teaching" (2 Timothy 4:2).
