Raytheon awarded $52 million for IRIDIUM antennas.


BEDFORD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 4, 1997--Raytheon Electronics Systems announced today that it has been awarded a $52.4 million contract by Motorola for 25 additional shipsets of Iridium iridium (ĭrĭd`ēəm), metallic chemical element; symbol Ir; at. no. 77; at. wt. 192.22; m.p. about 2,410°C;; b.p. about 4,130°C;; sp. gr. 22.55 at 20°C;; valence +3 or +4.  Main Mission Antennas.

The IRIDIUM(r) Program is a satellite-based wireless-telephone system that will allow users to make calls to anyone, anywhere in the world. Raytheon is currently under contract to develop and produce eighty (80) satellites worth of Main Mission Antennas (MMAs). The first delivery of the production antennas occurred in December 1995, with the last delivery expected in October 2000. The baseline sixty-six (66) satellite constellation is expected to be fully deployed and operational by September 1998.
