Raytheon and Westinghouse consortium awarded $382 million for Pakistani power project.

LEXINGTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 22, 1996-- A consortium of Raytheon Engineers & Constructors and Westinghouse has been awarded a $382 million contract for a 450 megawatt barge-mounted power plant to be located in Port Qasim, Karachi, Pakistan, the two companies announced today.

Under the lump-sum contract with WAK Orient Power & Light Limited, a company owned by the sponsors of Pakistan's WAK Gas, Raytheon will provide turnkey engineering, procurement, and construction services. This will include fabricating barges, installing power plant equipment, shipping the barges to Port Qasim, and testing and commissioning the equipment.

Westinghouse will supply six 50-megawatt Model 251B11 combustion turbines, three steam turbine-generators, six heat recovery steam generators, and a Westinghouse WDPF Distributed Control System (DCS). The combustion and steam turbine-generators will be manufactured in Westinghouse's North American factories. Westinghouse also will supply operation and maintenance services for 12 years under a separate contract.

Each company's share of the contract is approximately equal.

The 450 megawatt power plant is believed to be the largest ever mounted on a barge. The plant will actually consist of six barges, with three having two gas turbines each and the other three barges having one steam turbine each.

Power barges are a growing part of our business because they offer a way to provide power quickly and at lower risk to developing countries in need of increased capacity."

Preliminary work is under way on the project, with the developers and the consortium members expeditiously working toward financial closing. Marine Energy Systems Corporation (MESC) of Charleston, S.C., under subcontract to Raytheon, will build and outfit the barges, including the installation of the thermal islands. It is contemplated that a substantial portion of MESC's scope of work will be performed at its Bushy Park facility in Berkeley County, S.C.

Raytheon's experience in barge-mounted power plants includes the 192 megawatt Sidney A. Murray Jr. Hydroelectric Station in Vidalia, La., and a 186 megawatt combined-cycle power barge in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. Westinghouse is under contract to provide several barge mounted power plants, including the 144 megawatt simple cycle power barges for Ghana and the 288 megawatt power barge project in conjunction with the Sabah Shipyard in Malaysia, also for Pakistan. Westinghouse also provided the equipment for a 100 megawatt power barge currently operating in the Philippines.
