Raytheon Systems Company Awarded $81.2 Million to Upgrade BMEWS At Clear Air Station, Alaska.

, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 6, 1998--Raytheon Systems Company's Marlborough, Mass. unit has been awarded a U.S. Air Force contract valued at $81.2 million to upgrade the Ballistic Missile Early Warning System An electronic system for providing detection and early warning of attack by enemy intercontinental ballistic missiles. Also called BMEWS.  (BMEWS BMEWS Ballistic Missile Early Warning System ) at Clear Air Station, Alaska.

Raytheon will replace the existing mechanical radars at the Clear Air Station site with a newer, more supportable solid state phased array radar. The company previously upgraded the BMEWS sites at Thule, Greenland and Fylingdales, England, with phased array radars in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The upgrade at Clear Air Station will include the design and construction by Raytheon Engineers & Constructors of a ten-story, 83,000 square foot technical facility in which the radar electronics will be installed and tested. Work is expected to be completed by October, 2001.
