Raytheon Electronic Systems awarded radar contract for Cyprus Airport upgrade.


BEDFORD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--August 16, 1997--The Cyprus Telecommunications Authority has awarded Raytheon Electronic Systems (RES) a contract to provide a monopulse secondary survelliance radar (MSSR MSSR Monopulse Secondary Surveillance Radar

) for Lara, near Paphos, in the southwestern region of Cyprus.

The radar will be supplied by Raytheon Cossor, a subsidary of Raytheon Electronic Systems, located in Essex, England.

This $2 million award is the first phase of upgrades planned by Cyprus Authorities to enhance their national Air Traffic Control (ATC ATC Air Traffic Control

) system. In this phase, Raytheon's MSSR will be a standalone installation that will provide en route ATC coverage for Cyprus. It will provide improved safety for the growing number of travelers flying in and out of the country.

Raytheon, as a full service ATC systems provider, will also support this turnkey contract by providing an equipment shelter and tower for the radarUs operation.

Cyprus ATC authories expect that future upgrades will include an additional MSSR and a primary survelliance radar for Lannaca, and an area control center for Nicosia.

Raytheon is a long-standing manufacturer of high quality system components and has produced more solid-state air traffic control radars than all of its competitors combined. Sixty-two of these radars have been sold to international customers, and over 180 monopulse secondary radars have been sold to 18 countries.

Raytheon's experience in international air traffic control is extensive, ranging from individual airport installations to country-wide, multiple-site turnkey systems. The commissioning of the Beijing ATC system is the most recent in a long line of international air traffic control successes for Raytheon.
