Raytek(R) Corporation, a worldwide leader in portable noncontact thermometry, is launching a new high-performance infrared thermometer that combines precision True Spot(TM) coaxial laser sighting, data logging and downloading capabilities with safety to allow its use in hazardous, potentially explosive, or flammable environments.

The Raytek MX4+ Nonincendive (NI) model has Factory Mutual approval as a Class I, Division 2, nonincendive device for use in potentially hazardous locations, and in the possible presence of acetylene, hydrogen, ethylene, or propane gases. FM approval is awarded to products after a rigorous review process. Factory Mutual is one of the most recognized organizations granting intrinsically safe and nonincendive use designations in North America, and is also accepted in many parts of the world. Approved nonincendive devices can be used when flammable gases or vapors may exist. They are incapable of releasing sufficient electrical or thermal energy to ignite flammable gases or vapors under normal operating and environmental conditions.

Plant managers and maintenance crews working in or around locations such as petrochemical refineries and tank farms; oil exploration facilities including offshore rigs; petroleum and gas pumping stations; auto and ship refueling; liquid natural gas storage; arms manufacturing and storage; and hydrogen generating facilities will increase their safety while recording and downloading temperature data when they use the MX4+ NI noncontact thermometer.

The MX4+ NI is the second Raytek product designed to increase safety on the job. Last year, Raytek introduced the Factory Mutual approved ST80 Intrinsically Safe model thermometer. It can be used in Class I, Division I locations where flammable material can be present continuously, frequently, or as the result of a breakdown, and in the presence of acetylene, hydrogen, ethylene, or propane gas.

Suggested manufacturer's list price for the new MX4+ NI is $1,995, and includes a specially marked TCK nonincendive probe. It also has the ability to log temperatures at 100 locations and contains software and cable for storing and graphing data.

Among the many features of the MX4+ NI thermometers are:

In addition, the MX4+ NI models accept input from K & J thermocouples or a thermistor probe, have an RS232 computer cable, and a plug-in power supply. The computer cable and power supply are not approved for use in hazardous locations.
