Ray A. Dickie, JCT editor, to receive 2004 FSCT George Baugh Heckel Award.

The Federation of Societies for Coatings Technology has announced that Ray A. Dickie, editor of JCT RESEARCH and JCT COATINGSTECH, has been named the recipient of the organization's highest honor--the George Baugh Heckel Award.

Presentation of the Heckel Award will be made at the Opening Session of the Federation's 82nd Annual Meeting, at McCormick Place North, Chicago, IL on October 27, 2004.

Considered the most prestigious of FSCT awards, the George Baugh Heckel Award recognizes an individual whose contributions to the organization have been outstanding.

Established in 1951, the award is dedicated to the memory of George Baugh Heckel, who served as temporary chairman when the Federation was organized in 1922, and as secretary for many years thereafter.

FSCT Accomplishments

Having served the FSCT for many years as a member of both the Publications Committee and the Editorial Review Board of the JOURNAL OF COATINGS TECHNOLOGY, Dr. Dickie was named technical editor and chair of the Editorial Review Board in 1997. Upon his retirement from Ford Motor Co. at the beginning of 2000, Dr. Dickie was named editor of JCT. In 2004, the FSCT separated this publication into two journals: JOURNAL OF COATINGS TECHNOLOGY RESEARCH and JCT COATINGSTECH. Dr. Dickie was named as editor of both publications. Dr. Dickie's scientific contributions to the industry were recognized by the FSCT when he was invited to present the Joseph J. Mattiello Memorial Lecturer at the organization's 1994 Annual Meeting in Atlanta, GA. Dr. Dickie served as chair of the Mattiello Committee in 1999. He was for many years a member of the Detroit Society for Coatings Technology and is currently a member of the Piedmont Society for Coatings Technology.

Career Highlights

Dr. Dickie graduated from the University of North Dakota with a B.S. Chemistry degree. After earning the Ph. D. degree in physical chemistry at the University of Wisconsin, he was a post-doctoral research fellow at the University of Glasgow and at Stanford Research Institute (now SRI International). Dr. Dickie joined Ford Motor Co. in 1968, and was Corporate Technical Specialist when he retired from Ford in the beginning of 2000.

While at Ford, Dr. Dickie's research interests centered on automotive paints, polymer blends and composites, structural adhesives, and related areas of polymer science. His technical contributions included new approaches to a wide range of automotive coatings (corrosion-resistant primers, water-based topcoats, electron beam cure coatings) and fundamental investigations of coating adhesion and degradation mechanisms. In addition, he led research on the use of structural adhesive bonding for automotive applications including body construction.

Industry-Related Activities

Dr. Dickie is a member of the American Chemical Society, the Adhesion Society, and the Society of Rheology. He served as chair of the ACS Division of Polymeric Materials: Science and Engineering (PMSE) in 1987, and was general secretary of the ACS Macromolecular Secretariat in 1990. A popular lecturer, he has organized ACS symposia on composites, crosslinking systems, and corrosion protective coatings. In addition, he chaired the 1994 Gordon Research Conference on the Science of Adhesion.

Dr. Dickie is currently on the editorial advisory board of Progress in Organic Coatings, and previously served on the editorial boards of several other journals including the Journal of Adhesion Science and Technology and Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research.

Earlier this year, he was recognized by the Adhesion Society as a Robert L. Patrick Fellow. He recently completed a term as president of the Society, and previously served as program chair and vice president. He was technical program chair of the Society's 21st annual meeting.

Also in 2004, Dr. Dickie was honored by the American Chemical Society Division of Polymeric Materials: Science and Engineering (PMSE) with its Distinguished Service Award for his out-standing contributions to the long-term welfare of the PMSE division. A member of the first class of Fellows of PMSE, he has served on PMSE's executive committee in various positions ranging from member-at-large to chair. Currently a Councilor for the Division and a member of its longrange planning committee, he has also served as a member of the ACS Council Committee on Constitution and Bylaws, and the Committee on Committees. In 1992, Dr. Dickie was the recipient of the prestigious Roy Tess Award in Coatings from PMSE. In addition, Dr. Dickie has served as Councilor for the ACS Detroit Local Section; he received the section's Thomas Midgley Award for scientific contributions to the automotive industry in 1989 and its Distinguished Service Award in 1991. He was also awarded the Distinguished Alumni Lectureship in Chemistry at the University of North Dakota in 1989.

Author of over 100 publications, Dr. Dickie has edited four books, and has been awarded 42 U.S. patents.
