Ratzinger's feminism.Sidney Callahan is one of the few Catholic feminists who can be both kind and truthful when it comes to commenting upon the hierarchy's strange teachings on women ("Ratzinger, Feminist?" September 10). It is difficult to articulate just how offended and alienated I feel when confronted yet again with texts that purport to "teach" women about their "place" in the world. It's a balm balm (bahm) 1. a soothing or healing medicine. 2. balsam. lemon balm , sweet balm a preparation of the fresh or dried herb of Melissa officinalis, to know that someone can keep it together enough to say what, sadly, is so necessary. There may be more important issues in the world today, but, to me, none carries the weight of Catholic feminism. True gospel peace between the men and women in our church could catapult us into a future that, at the present time, can only be imagined. ANNE LAURANCE Ann Arbor, Mich. |
