When you purchase a CD, you agree not to access the money for a specific amount of time: three months, six months, one year, or five years. If you want to withdraw the money before the agreed time period, you will have to pay a penalty.

Typically, the longer you agree to keep your money deposited, the higher the interest rate you will receive. Depositing larger sums of money will also increase your rate of interest. Interest rates for CDs are fixed; they don't change until the investment period expires.
