Raptor selected by Shiva to secure Internet and Intranet data communications; Eagle firewall provides added level of security for remote users and telecommuters accessing corporate information.

WALTHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 20, 1996--Companies with a mobile and telecommuting telecommuting, an arrangement by which people work at home using a computer and telephone, transmitting work material to a business office by means of a modem and telephone lines; it is also known as telework.  workforce can now provide a heightened level of security for remote access to corporate data over the Internet and Intranets as a result of a new licensing agreement between Raptor Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:RAPT) and Shiva Corporation (Nasdaq:SHVA SHVA Satellite Home Viewer Act of 1988 ).

Shiva selected Raptor's Eagle family of Internet and LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used.  security firewall software, including the company's recently announced EagleNT product suite for Microsoft's Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP (see Windows). Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking. , to extend application level firewall security to users of Shiva's WebRover remote access system (see today's related announcement, Shiva introduces WebRover solution). The licensing agreement helps companies secure workgroup LANs, desktop workstations, mobile PCs and servers on private networks, as well as Internet data traffic, while addressing evolving business needs for information access at any time from any location.

"While WebRover already provides several levels of security, Raptor's Eagle firewall offers an additional safeguard to prevent unauthorized network access," said Angelo Santinelli, Shiva's vice president, marketing. By working closely with Raptor, Shiva can provide the same degree of secure access for the Internet it has traditionally offered to corporate LAN users."

The Raptor-Shiva licensing agreement is significant because it gives Shiva a true, real-time application-level firewall a key component for implementing large-scale Internet and Intranet access security and enterprise-wide secure networks. Shiva also gains a complete modular firewall architecture ideal for small, medium and large sites that is configurable to fit many network situations.

Virtual private networks

Shiva customers can reap the benefits of Raptor's virtual private networking (VPN (Virtual Private Network) A private network that is configured within a public network (a carrier's network or the Internet) in order to take advantage of the economies of scale and management facilities of large networks. ) technology, which is of particular significance to smaller companies with limited IS budgets because it offers the accessibility and the security of a private leased T1 line at a fraction of the cost. VPN sets up inpenetratable "tunnels" through the Internet or corporate networks through which data can travel securely. These authenticated, encrypted tunnels keep data from being accessed or modified as it passes through the Internet, ensuring customers that confidentiality is maintained.

"While information access is the key to business success, companies must ensure that data integrity is maintained," said Robert Steinkrauss, president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of Raptor Systems, Inc. "The combination of Shiva's remote access technology with Raptor's enterprise security solutions allows organizations to maintain greater control over information access while allowing authorized users to have access to LANs, Intranets and the Internet wherever they are, whenever they need it."

Raptor's Eagle family is the industry's first real-time, application-level firewall solution, offering advanced features such as access control, authentication, encryption, exclusive real-time Suspicious Activity Monitor (SAM) and extensive detection, alarm and reporting capabilities. With Eagle, an entire enterprise's network security policy can be created, monitored and maintained from a single workstation.
