Summary: Rapper Speech Debelle has won the Mercury Prize for her album Speech Therapy.

Rapper Speech Debelle has won the Mercury Prize for her album Speech Therapy.

She beat 11 other shortlisted acts at the ceremony at the Grosvener House Hotel in central London.

She follows in the footsteps of groups such as Klaxons, Arctic Monkeys and last year's winners Elbow.

The South Londoner's album was inspired by the time she spent in a homeless hostel in her teens.

The Barclaycard Mercury Award is worth Au20,000, but for most acts it is the exposure and boost in sales which follow a win which are even more valuable.
